Five Ways to Make Money When Moving

MovingIf you’ve ever moved before, you know how expensive it can be. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could cut your costs somehow? Well, next time you move or if you’re moving for the first time soon, here are a few tips from Moving.com to put a little green in your pocket.

Boxes

Once your move is done, empty boxes accumulate quickly in your new residence. Instead of throwing them out, try and sell them to someone who may be moving soon. You could do this through word of mouth at work or in your neighborhood, or you could try online sites like Craigslist and post an ad for them.

Furniture

If you are moving to a smaller place, chances are you aren’t going to be able to bring all of your furniture with you. So, if it is still in good shape, try selling your furniture to someone who is moving to a bigger place and can use it or to someone who is looking for new furniture. You can also consider donating lightly worn furnishings to Goodwill or the Salvation Army – just be sure to get a receipt for your charitable donation to refer to at tax time.

Old Electronics

Many of us have old electronics, whether it’s an antiquated flip phone or an ancient iPod. You don’t want to throw these items out, but you can try to sell them. You may not get back what you originally paid for them, but you can likely get some of your money back. Many areas also have kiosks or resellers that will buy used electronics if you don’t have luck with an online ad.

Kitchen Items

Like furnishings, if you are moving into a smaller place, there’s a good chance that are you aren’t going to be able to bring all of your kitchen items with you. If you have pots, pans, flatware or kitchen appliances in good, working condition, you might able to recapture some of your costs by selling these online.

Records/CDs

With everyone using iPods and music apps now, these items have become obsolete for most people. That means there’s no better time to get rid of them than when you move. Getting rid of your old albums kills two birds with one stone –you free up space in your new residence while also earning a few bucks to spend on a music playing device or to download music on your phone.
